What is a learning management system (LMS)?

You are a company or a training organization and are ready to use technology to facilitate the management, follow-up or administration of your face-to-face training? You wish to digitize some or all of your training courses? Then you have probably heard of the LMS (Learning Management System).

As its name suggests, the LMS enables the "management" of the training device(s): it involves deploying and monitoring training actions from a platform that centralises and organises all this information automatically.

But, depending on your goals, the LMS will allow you more:

  • Make downloadable learning resources more easily accessible on the platform: your learners will find their learning content just like in a tidy binder and will often be able to access it from a mobile application.
  • Create innovative educational resources. The LMS often has built-in authoring tools that allow you to develop online resources without the need for additional third-party software. 
  • Produce an online collective learning space. Virtual classes can be organized from the platform as well as other learning spaces based on synchronous or asynchronous interaction and exchange between learners, such as the forum.

The LMS and training evaluation


The LMS functions as a warehouse in which you can store and track information about your training modules, resources, learners and skills plan. Since all this information is stored there, it is easier to automatically evaluate the follow-up, commitment and success of your training courses. This data can be related to many parameters related to the training action. Here are some of them: 

  • learner profile and behaviour (profile, time spent on the platform, level and results); 
  • learner group statistics (comparing groups with each other and analysing differences in the behaviour of groups with different learning modalities); 
  • connection time (full time, real connection time, pedagogical time);
  • scores (all types of assessment, hot and cold).

The LMS and extended enterprises


The notions of "extended training" or "extended enterprise" are not very widespread. However, it is a fact that many companies are continually surrounding themselves with new partners and have to adapt their management and training processes.  Overall, almost no company works without a partner: supplier, distributor, franchisee, subsidiary. The LMS is therefore essential to train the various teams on a variety of subjects. In this way, the ecosystem will be able to integrate the knowledge and data necessary for its proper functioning.
